Town
Church
At the
south east corner of San José de Maipo town main square,
we find the most characteristic building of the zone, it reflects
the history and the evolution of the commune, the Town Church;
based on historic data it is stated that it became a curacy
on December 20, 1798. The intention was to spread the Catholic
faith along the whole parish of the range surrounding Maipo
River.
This Town
Church shows the functionality of the systems for building
at XVIII century, the imposing wooden bells tower stands out
from the building; it was designed about one century after
the beginning of its construction. Within the church we find
an atmosphere of spirituality, its rustic style and the toll
of the bells make this building to be a place where faith
and traditions are deeply felt. Because of its important cultural
legacy, almost one month before the celebration of the bicentenary
of the foundation of the town it was declared Historic Monument
on June 15, 1992 by means of the decree from the Ministry
of Education N° 309.
